Benjamin F. Powell Jr., 85, of Louisville, entered into eternal life on Thursday, April 15, 2010, surrounded by his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Jeanne M. Powell; daughter, Linda C. Powell; a son, Michael (Cheryl) Powell; two grandsons, Derek and Justin; a sister, Rachel Bailey of Roanoke, Va.; and his two constant pals, Shadow and Lakota.
Powell spent 40 years of his life residing in Albany, N.Y. where he raised his family and retired from AT&T after 37 years of service. He was involved with the National Little League and was an active member in the 8th Air Force Historical Society of Central New York Chapter and the 95th Bomb Group Society in Pooler, Ga.
He moved to Louisville with his wife and daughter five and a half years ago where he watched his grandsons grow and enjoyed attending all their sporting events. He also enjoyed traveling, the beach, attending community events in both Albany and Louisville and spending time with his family.
He proudly served his country as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he flew 35 missions as a top turret gunner on B-17s over Germany and as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served in Korea. He received several commendations with both branches of the military including the Air Medal with ve Oak Leaf Clusters.
Private memorial services will be held at the Middletown United Methodist Church in Middletown. Internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
Because Mr. and Mrs. Powell support several animal protection agencies they ask that donations be made to the Hudson-Mohawk Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Albany, N.Y. 12204, or to the Kentucky Humane Society, 241 Steedly Drive, Louisville, Ky., 40214.
