John William Spivey, Jr., 83, of Hamburg, died March 17, 2009.

He was born on March 4, 1926, in Hamburg to John W. Spivey and Helen Welsh Spivey. He served as a member of the 95th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force and served on B-17 bombers. He was an active member of and served as president of the Rotary Club of Hamburg, the Hamburg "JCs," Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, and the Hamburg Cemetery Association. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Ashley County Farm Bureau Federation. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation. He was appointed to the Ashley County Equalization Board, where he served for 20 years. He was also president and a member of the Ashley County Board of Education for over 20 years. He also received the "Richie Emory Lifetime Achievement Award" and the "Fred LaGrone Lifetime Achievement Award" in recognition of his lifetime of service to the City of Hamburg and its citizens. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Commercial Bank in Monticello, and was a director of Farmers Bank in Hamburg. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Farmers Bank. He founded the partnership of Locke & Spivey. He was a licensed real estate broker and a partner in Ashley Realty. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Hamburg. He served as a trustee, chairman of the Administrative Board. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Matthews Spivey; his parents; and his brother, James.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, March 20, at the First United Methodist Church, in Hamburg with burial at the Hamburg Cemetery under the direction of Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home of Hamburg.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Foote Spivey of Hamburg; his sister, Louise Spivey Baber, of Little Rock; his children, John William (Bill) III of Little Rock, Dr. Thomas M. Spivey of Paris; Dr. James Richard Spivey of Lagrange, Ga.; Susan Spivey Freydl of Little Rock; and Dr. David Welsh Spivey of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; his stepdaughter, Rachelle Foote Speegle, of Shreveport, La.; his stepson, Dr.

William E. Foote IV of Hamburg,; and his stepdaughter, Stephanie Foote Johnston of Little Rock; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Men's Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church; the Ofcers and Directors of Farmers Bank and the LaGrone Drug Store afternoon coffee group.
