Herbert S. Sorensen
April 4, 1919 – June 2, 1995
Herbert S. Sorensen, 76, died Friday, June 2, 1995 in Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Iowa City, after an extended illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, West Branch United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Richard Paulus. Burial: West Branch Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at West Branch Chapel of Barker Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Spencer and wife Marcia of Iowa City and Donald of Davenport; two daughters, Linda and husband Robert Kessler of Iowa City and Cindy Sorensen-Egan and husband David of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Stafford of Mount Pleasant and Connie Nielsen of California; eight grandchildren; and ve great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Born April 4, 1919, in West Branch, the son of Jens and Mary Christensen Sorensen, he married Dorothy Blair in Newton on Jan. 18, 1941. Most of his life had been spent as a building contractor in the West Branch area. An Air Force veteran, he served as a sergeant during World War II with the 95th Bomb Group in England in the ETO area. He was a member and past commander of Chauncey Butler American Legion Post, West Branch; member of Mercy and St. Luke's hospitals' stroke clubs; and the Methodist Church.
A memorial fund has been established for West Branch First Responders.
