Ellis B. Scripture
March 5, 1918 – February 3, 2005
SCRIPTURE, ELLIS B. "SCRIP" of Birmingham, Alabama, formerly of York, Pennsylvania died February 3, 2005. A son of the late Londus H. and Bessie (Kirk) Scripture, he was born March 5, 1918 in Greensburg, Indiana. Mr. Scripture graduated from Indiana University and was first employed as a Secretary of the YMCA in Chicago, Illinois.
He proudly served in the U. S. Army Air Corps in World War II as a Lt. Colonel and Aerial Navigator in the 95th Bomb Group. He participated in the air offensive in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, a Bronze Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster and Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters.
Scrip retired as a Vice President of the Welding Division of Teledyne McKay. His career also included Fram Corporation and Stewart Warner Company. He was a former member, elder and deacon of First Presbyterian Church, York, Pennsylvania and a current member of South Highland Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, AL.
A devoted Christian, loving husband, father, brother and friend, Scrip will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years. Margaret H. (Peggy) Scripture, his parents, brother, Alfred Scripture, and sister, Helen Speed.
Surviving are his daughters, Isabeth Gannon of Birmingham, AL; Susan (Bobby) Strickland, Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren Gray (Havila) Mitchell, Alexandria, VA; Brad Gannon, Birmingham, AL; Grant Gannon, Oxford, MS and beloved sisters, Doris Scripture and Kathryn Meek of Greensburg, IN.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 5, 2005 in the chapel of South Highland Presbyterian Church, 2035 Highland Ave. 35205, Reverend Noelle Read, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Kingston, IN.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The 95th Bomb Group (H) Memorials Foundation or The Presbyterian Children's Home, Talladega, AL c/o South Highland Presbyterian Church.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the professional and loving care Scrip received from the staff at Chateau Vestavia in Birmingham and Country Meadows in York, PA.
