POWER, Montana - Army Air Corps World War II veteran and retired businessman Emil George Bakke, 91, of Power, died of natural causes Friday at Peace Hospice in Great Falls. His memorial service is 2 p.m. Thursday at Croxford Funeral Home in Great Falls.

Survivors include a son, Wayne Bakke of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Lyla Lake of Irvine, Calf.; a brother, Clifford Bakke of Stanley, N.D.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Bann of Missoula; and special friends Floyd and Sharron Grassman of Power.

Emil was born Aug. 27, 1917, in Stanley, N.D., where he was raised and educated, graduating from Stanley High School in 1935. He attended welding school in Fargo, N.D., in 1941, and worked as a welder in Seattle and Alaska before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He served in the European Theatre in England with the 8th Air Force and the Pacific Theatre with the 13th Air Force in Guam. He was discharged on Dec. 1, 1945, with the rank of staff sergeant.

He married Ethel Hermanson in 1948 in Stanley. Emil and Ethel owned and operated Les' Bar in Power, with his sister and brother-in-law, Clarice and John Oberosler, from March 1950 until retiring on June 30, 1984.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Bakke, in 2001.
