Arthur Robert Scroggins left formation on Sunday, 3 December 2017, at age 96. Robert passed away in his native Tallassee, AL.
“He is survived by his daughter Pat Merrett (Stan) of Lake Martin; sons Art Scroggins (Dale) of Selma and Harry Scroggins (Beverly) of Tallassee; grandchildren Keefe Merrett (Tammy) of Reeltown, Ashley and Ryan Merrett of Auburn, Shawn Cox (Paul), Shane Scroggins (Candice), Andy Scroggins (Claire), all of Tallassee, David Scroggins of Selma, and Scott Scroggins of Auburn; great grandchildren Tristan and Morgan Merrett of Reeltown, Luke Merrett of Auburn, Elsie and Lou Scroggins and Cheyenne and Dustin Cox, all of Tallassee. Robert is preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Mrs. Irene Houston Scroggins, and his sisters Challice Rhodes and Dot Saunders.
“When Pearl Harbor was bombed, Robert joined the Army Air Corps (now US Air Force). He was a bombardier with the 95th Bomb Group out of Horham, England, and flew missions over Germany. He survived three crashes to return home to his family, which included a 2-year old daughter he had never seen.
“After the war, he helped form the Tallassee National Guard. His unit was activated during the Korean War where he served as Company Commander training soldiers. Robert became Postmaster in 1945 and retired from the post office and the military in 1982. He served on the Community Hospital Board for 23 years, Community Tri County healthcare for 12 years, and was a Tallassee City Councilman from 1988 until 1992.
“Robert was very artistic and loved showing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to draw. He loved counted cross stitch, making latch hook rugs, and was well known for his pickles he canned each year.
“‘The Greatest Generation’ has lost one of their finest.
“In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to East Tallassee Methodist Church, 101 Central Blvd, Tallassee, Alabama 36078 or Tallassee Community Hospice, 1526 Gilmer Ave, Tallassee, Alabama 36078.”
Funeral services were held on Thursday, 7 December 2017, from Jeffcoat Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jay Woodall officiating, Jeffcoat Funeral Home directing. The family received friends Wednesday, 6 December 2017, at Jeffcoat Funeral Home.
