Melvin William Engen

Melvin Engen, 88, Dickinson, N.D., formerly of Viking, Minn., and Warren, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in a nursing home in Dickinson.
Melvin William Engen was born Oct. 4, 1912, the son of William and Caroline (Grund) Engen, in Marshall County, Minn. He attended school in Warren and Pitt, Minn. He joined the U.S. Army on April 30, 1942, in Fort Snelling, Minn. He worked as an airplane and engine mechanic in the 334th Bomb Squadron 95th Bombers Group. He had served during the air offensive in Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He earned the rank of Sergeant. He was discharged Sept. 23, 1945. He lived in several veterans homes in Minnesota and North Dakota. In 1992, he moved to Dickinson.
He is survived by a brother, Ronald (Marie), Thief River Falls; and sisters, Myrtle Andeen, Wahpeton, N.D., Grace Haack, Minneapolis, and Audrey Freshwater, Fresno, Calif.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Clayton, Paul, Vernon and Eldor; and sisters, Doris Gibson and Eunice Kreuger.
Services: Will be held in the spring.
Military Rites: Thief River Falls American Legion and VFW Posts.
