Jack Coogan Hallman, resident of Sebring, Florida, formerly of Bridgeville, Delaware, passed away on January 20, 2021 of COVID complications. He was born in Saxton, Pennsylvania on May 21, 1925 to James Emerson and Lila Brantner Hallman. His first marriage was to Mary Elizabeth Strait of Huntingdon, PA on April 9, 1950. She preceded him in death on May 16, 1980. They had two daughters: Elizabeth Jane (Elmer B. Jr) Tingle of Millsboro, Delaware, and Linda Louise (Michael) Adamski of Marcellus, Michigan. His second marriage was on Christmas morning 1981 in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Millsboro, DE to Anne Elizabeth Whitledge Hill, who had three children: Cathi Hill Morrison of Winter Haven, FL, Cynthia Hill of Alexandria, Virgina, and Christy (Stephen) Suriner of Hinsdale, Massachusetts. Together they have 12 grandchildren (Katie, John Coogan, Jacky, Anne, Thomas, Royanne, Caitlin, Sarah, Melissa, Alexandra, Karis, Jessica) and 11 great-grandchildren (Madison, Scout, Annie Dai, Aryana, Rorie, Andrew, Summer, Daisy, Isla, Mackenzie, Ryleigh). To them, he was always their beloved Grampy.

Mr. Hallman served in the U.S. Air Force as a B-17 radio operator and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant with the 334th Squadron, 95th Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force during World War II. He was shot down over Germany (MIA) and was a prisoner of war (POW) until Liberation day in 1945.

In 1949, Jack obtained his bachelor’s degree with majors in pre-medicine, sociology and secondary education at Juniata College in Huntington, PA. He received his master’s degree in guidance at Penn State University (State College) where he continued work on his doctorate.

In the fall of 1958, he became an Assistant Director at Elmira College in Elmira, New York. Mr. Hallman relocated with his family to accept the position of Supervisor of Reading for the Newark, Delaware public school district. In 1970, he became the Indian River School District (Selbyville DE) Director of Curriculum and retired from that position in 1988.

A proud Mason, Jack held life memberships in many educational, religious, and military organizations. An active Episcopalian, he served on various church vestries and held licenses for eucharistic visitors, Lay Reader and Communion Assistant. He was given his last rites by Father Scott Walker of St. Agnes Episcopal Church, Sebring, FL and will be blessed with a commitment service at St. Agnes on Monday for family only.

Internment with military honors will be in the historic Prince George’s Chapel cemetery in Dagsboro, Delaware post COVID. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his memory to St. Agnes Episcopal Church Outreach Food Program, 3840 Lakeview Drive, Sebring, FL 33870, or a charity of choice.
