Clinton was "Killed In Action" at the Alconbury Royal Air Force Base in England along with 18 other airmen when, while loading B-17F (#42-29685), one of the 500 lb bombs exploded and caused a chain reaction of other explosions.

The explosions killed 19 airmen, severely injured 20 others, damaged 11 B-17's, and totally destroyed 2 others. The two B-17's destroyed were #42-29685 & #42-29706.
