The B-17F, 42-5893 “Sad Sack” was shot down near Hanover, Germany on 7/26/1943. All crew members became POWs. It was during the forced POW march that Sergeant Cothran was shot by German soldiers as he attempted to escape. He was buried in a mass grave near Stein, Austria. Later his body was moved to the Evergreen Cemetary in Paris, Texas.
