Edward E. "Ed" Smith

Funeral services for Edward E. "Ed" Smith Sr., 79, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, conducted by the Revs. Dennis Bolton, Alice Klatt, and LaVaughn Keisler. Burial will be in Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. Memorials may be made to "Capital Improvement Fund" at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church.
Mr. Smith died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999. Born in Leesville, he was a son of the late Eugene Cullum and Annie Hallman Smith. He was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church where he served on the church counsil and was retired from Peninsula Life Insurance Co.
He was a World War II Army Veteran, serving in the European Theater as a B-17 Waist Gunner attached to the 336th Squadron, 95th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force based in England.
He was a member of the NCT and served as Master of Travel. Mr. Smith was a member of Sinclair Masonic Lodge #154 and was Explorer Advisor to "BSA" Post 82 of West Columbia. He was also a member of the American Legion, was an avid sherman and hunter, and a devoted family man.
Surviving are his wife, Faye T. Smith of West Columbia; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Lynne and George Faulk of Columbia; son and daughter-in-law, Edward E. and Virginia Hamson Smith Jr. of Lexington; brother and sister-in-law, H.C. and Lauretha Smith of Newberry; grandchildren, Caroline Hairston Watson, Sarah Hairston, Edward E. Smith III; step-grandchildren, Kelly Hairston, Peter Hairston, Davy Hairston, Kelly Hamson, Andrew Hamson; two step-great grandchildren; mother-in- law, Dora M. Cole of West Columbia; a number of nieces and nephews.
