JAMMIE M. PHILPOTT

September 28, 1919 – January 18, 1999

Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jammie M. Philpott died Jan. 18, 1999, in Norfolk. Services with full military honors will be held today at Andersonville National Cemetery, Ga. He served the United States for 30 years and was a veteran of three wars: Europe, Korea and Vietnam.

Gen. Philpott was born in Ashland, Okla., on Sept. 28, 1919. He graduated from West Point in June 1943 and was later assigned to the 95th Bombardment Group, Eighth Air Force, in England. During World War II, he flew 21 missions in B-17 Flying Fortresses over Europe, serving as wing lead combat pilot and squadron commander.

His assignments included Director of Intelligence for Strategic Air Command; Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence for the Seventh Air Force in the Republic of Vietnam; Air Force Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence; Deputy Director, Defense Intelligence Agency; and Vice Commander in Chief, U.S.A.F. Europe. Following his retirement, Gen. Philpott resided in Reynolds, Ga., and Reliance, Tenn.

A command pilot, his military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster, and the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.

Gen. Philpott was married to the former Lucy L. Bryan of Reynolds, Ga. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Louisa Enright of Falls Church, Va., Susan Heath of Virginia Beach and Jamie Howser of Marietta, Ga.; a son, Jonathan Philpott, M.D., of Greenville, N.C.; nine granddaughters; two grandsons; and a sister, Jean Spitzer of Colorado Springs, Colo. He was a Presbyterian and served as an elder.
