DONALD W. OVERDORFF
September 14, 1921 – June 10, 1995
Donald W. "Scratch" Overdorff, 73, of York, died at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Lebanon Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was the husband of Elmyra K. (Heisler) Overdorff.
The service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E. Market St., York. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery. Viewing will be 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Overdorff was born Sept. 14, 1921, in Windsor. He was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Carrie (Gulden) Overdorff.
He was a retired salesman for the Glen-Gery Brick Co. after 40-plus years of service. He had started in the yard and worked up to superintendent of the plant and later served as a salesman.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a second lieutenant. He was recipient of a Purple Heart and a POW Medal. He was captured and was a prisoner of war in Stalag I at Barth, Germany, for nine months.
Mr. Overdorff was a graduate of Red Lion Area High School with the Class of 1939 and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church of York.
A member of York County Home Builders Association, he acted as a liaison between the Glen-Gery Brick Co. and the trowel trades of York County Area Vocational Technical School.
He was an honorary life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Red Lion Lodge. He belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Zeredatha Lodge 451, the American Legion Red Lion Post 543 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Red Lion Post 1446.
His other service related memberships included: Life member of The Mighty Eight, the 95th Bomb Group (H) Association, and American Ex-Prisoners of War and was a charter member of The Eagle Talk and The Caterpillar Club.
Mr. Overdorff also is survived by a daughter, Donita M. Gallagher of York; a son, Darrell H. Hivner of York; four grandchildren; a brother, Franklin Overdorff of Florida; and four sisters, Bernetta Baker of Windsor, Josephine Ring of Jacobus, Lois Bollinger of York, and Phyllis Barnes of Dover.
Officiating at the service will be his pastor, the Rev. Keith J. Schmuck.
