With the deepest sadness, the Memorials Foundation and the Heritage Association announce that Herb Wilkov of New York City left formation on 14 March 2022 at the age of 98. Herb was a 336th navigator. His dear wife Sandy shared the devastating news with Linda Endris. Herb passed away at NY Presbyterian Weill Cornell University Hospital on NYC’s East Side where he and Sandy lived. Folded wings.

Herb’s obituary reads as follows:

“WILKOV--Herbert, age 98, died March 14, 2022. Herb was an English Teacher in New York City. He was a navigator in the 8th Air Force in WWII in England and completed 35 Missions. He was a good athlete and enjoyed tennis in Central Park. Herb was dearly loved by his wife Sandy.

As anyone who knew him will attest, Herb was the most decent of men. He lived his life as a husband, a friend, and a teacher with love of others and humanity to spare. Herb shared those qualities at reunions in both the United States and Horham. At Horham, he enjoyed the townsfolk as well as the place. Until the end of his life, Herb spoke with fond memories of Alan Johnson; Irene and David at The Ancient House; the Kirkum family; the Critiens at The Dragon House; and Philip & James Mutton. At stateside reunions, he bonded with many Vets no longer with us, including Ben Roujansky, Bob Fay, John Walters, Lloyd Krueger, and Irv Rothman. Herb admired greatly pilot Jack Bertram. He also revered the late Leslie Lenox, his crew’s pilot. About Lenox, Herb could rhapsodize for hours.

For Sandy, Herb was truly her everything. For others, Herb was “the navigator, B-17 Starduster.” He had a memorable way, as Linda Endris recalls, of singing phrases from melodies in a conversation instead of speaking. His imprint on 95th reunions and the Bomb Group family will be eternal.
