Heber Garrett Fackrell
July 30, 1923 – January 28, 2009
Dr. Heber Garrett Fackrell passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 in South Ogden.
He was born July 30, 1923 in Preston, Idaho, the son of Forrest A. and Wealthy Sutton Fackrell. Heber married Margaret E. Binnie June 11, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Heber graduated from Preston High School in 1941.
He served his country during World War II as a member of the Eighth Army Air Force – 95th Bombardment Group from 1943 -1945 in the European Theater. He flew 32 missions over Germany and on January 28, 1945, his plane was shot down during a mission over Duisburg, Germany but he was able to parachute into friendly territory. While serving in the Army Air Force he earned the Army Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, the ETO Ribbon, and 4 Battle Stars.
Upon being discharged from the Air Force, Heber attended Utah State University where he met his eternal sweetheart, Margaret. He graduated in 1949 with a degree in Bacteriology. He then attended Dental School at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Stanford University in San Francisco, graduating in 1952. Heber began a dental career in Ogden later that year, and served his patients and the people of Ogden for 46 years, retiring in 1998.
Heber served as the President of the Northern Utah Dental Society. He was a member of the Ogden Exchange Club, Ogden Elks, secretary of Gamebirds Unlimited and the Ogden Golf and Country Club.
Heber was a kind husband, a loving father and grandfather and true friend. He was a true gentleman.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-days where he was a High Priest. He served as a Gospel Doctrine Teacher, a Deacon's Quorum Advisor, a member of the Young Men's Presidency, Sunday School Superintendent and secretary of the High Priests Group.
Heber enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid pheasant hunter, golfer, and ping pong player. He loved life and was blessed with an exceptional wit and he was a master of verbal comebacks. Putting smiles on others' faces was his specialty. He loved flowers and maintained his ower gardens as a work of art.
He was close to his grandchildren and especially enjoyed going to lunch with them. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, of 61 years; his children, John (Joan) Fackrell, Murray, Utah and their children, Jacob (Sarah), Jared, Jeremy, Jennifer, and Jilanne; Christine (Ron) Stuart, Ogden and their children, Matthew (Cheryl), Erin (Bob) Wallis, Stephanie (Ty) Sparrow, and Robert; James (Valerie) Fackrell, Ogden and their children, Tyler, Lyndsie, Jaden, Cole, Mitch, and Carson; six great-grandchildren, Kate Fackrell, Emma and Benjamin Stuart, Rachel and Joshua Wallis, and Bode Sparrow.
Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Nada (Ken) Williams, Big Rock, IL; and a sister-in-law, Jean Binnie, Ogden, whom he cared for deeply and was included in all family activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.
The family would like to thank the staff of Manor Care and Thatcher Brook Hospice for their kind and loving care.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Friends may call at the mortuary on Sunday, February 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday 10 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
