Doral Hupp

August 5, 1920 – February 8, 2007

Doral A. Hupp, 86 of Lake of the Woods, Fredericksburg, VA (formerly of Kettering, OH) died Feb. 8, 2007 at Mary Washington Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Winnie (McCroson) Hupp, children Michael E. Hupp, Diana L. Gioffre, Rodney A. Hupp and Anita L. Hupp and brother-in-law Clinton & Joyce McCroson; Grandchildren and great-grandchildren Wendi (and David) Pate & Dakota, Ryan Self and daughter Mackenzie Self, Albert (and Tricia) Hupp & Andrew, Kristen (and Troy) Farrar, Troy, Tyler & Tyson, Kelly Self, Matthew & Luke Hupp, Cody Hupp-Polla, and Alexis Gioffe and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in Palestine, WV on August 5, 1920, he was one of 8 children of Albert and Velma (Collins) Hupp. He graduated from Wirt County High School, and after serving in WWII he earned a BS degree from University of Cincinnati in 1949.

He entered the Army Air Corps in October 1942 and became a ball-turret gunner on a B-17 aircraft with the 412th Bomb Squadron of the 95th Bomb Group. After his B-17 was shot down, he was a prisoner of war at Stalag 17B (Krems, Austria) for 16 months. Doral received the POW medal and the Congressional Veterans Commendation.

Doral worked as a Procurement Officer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base for 26 years. He then moved to Virginia to work for the Marine Corp. where he retired from civil service in 1970.

Doral was a member of the L.O.W. Lions Club and volunteered with the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. An avid card player, he taught bridge at L.O.W. for over 25 years. He was a sportsman, enjoying hunting and surf fishing, as well as being a championship horseshoe pitcher, bowler and softball player.

Funeral service will be held at Lake of the Woods Church Wed. Feb. 14, 11 a.m. with burial at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
