Vernon S. White
October 23, 1921 – July 4, 2010
Vernon "Vern" Sprague White was born Oct. 23, 1921, in Salem and passed away July 4, 2010. He was a politically committed journalist and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara (Korell); and son, Christopher White. Vern is survived by his children, Walter of Salem; Alleyn Yasskin of Portland; Laura White of Albion, Calif.; and Susan Preiss of San Francisco; grandchildren, Joshua, Noah, Hannah, and Joel Yasskin; Maldon Meehan; and Jessica and Jason Preiss; and two great- grandchildren.
Vern had a lifelong avocation of politics, and his hobbies included history, genealogy, and the concept of smaller government with reduced taxes. He was editor of the Daily Journal of Commerce. In 1961, he became managing editor of "Western Timber Industry and News," which merged in 1971 with "World Wood Products." He was chairman of the Young Republicans in 1953 and founding president of the Trumpeters in 1957. From 1958 to 1960, Vern was chairman of the Multnomah County Republican Party.
Vern graduated from Portland's Washington High School and the University of Oregon where he joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He fought in World War II in the U.S. Army Air Forces' 95th Bomb Group.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010, in the World Forestry Center, Mount Hood Room (wheelchair accessible), 4033 S.W. Canyon Road, Portland. There is parking at the Oregon Zoo or take MAX. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to the Legacy Hospice Services, P.O. Box 4484, Portland, OR 97208, or to the Vernon White Memorial, c/o Trumpeters, 3236 S.W. Kelly Ave., Portland, OR 97239.
