Irving H. Hornung

Irving H. Hornung, formerly of Orchard Park, died Dec. 7 in Jupiter, Fla., after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 85.

Born in Buffalo, he served in the Army Air Forces during World War II in the 95th Bomb Group and was a volunteer on planes dropping food over the Netherlands on "Chowhound missions" at the end of the war. He was among the fliers honored at the 50th anniversary of the end of the war for saving many Dutch lives.

Self-employed, he was president of I.H. Hornung Inc. An industrial tool cutting specialist, he sold specialty tools to the auto industry.

Mr. Hornung was a past president of the Orchard Park Lions Club and was honored by the Lions as a life member. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was an avid sailor, skier and golfer. He moved to Florida in 2009.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former June R. Zahm; a son, Donald; and a daughter, Susan DiNatale.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Jan. 14 in Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, T equesta, Fla.
