Frank L. Shoring of Chatfield Drive, West Hartford, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016. Born in Arlington, Massachusetts, August 12, 1917, he graduated (A.B. 1940) from Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts. He did graduate study at Boston University, flight training at Susquehanna College, and earned the Chartered Life Underwriter designation in 1968 from the American College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

He was a veteran of World War II, with 26 combat missions over Germany with the 95th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force, USAF. In 1945, he married the former Marion Nelson of Lexington, Massachusetts. Marion predeceased him in 1985 in West Hartford.

In 1945 he joined Columbian National Life in Boston where he became Assistant Director of Agencies, then Claims Manager, and in 1955 was elected Second Vice President and Manager, Group Department. When the company merged with the Hartford Fire Group in 1958, he served in the same capacity, retiring in 1970. In 1971 he became Executive Director of the Hartford Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters and shortly afterward also served the Estate and Business Planning Council of Hartford as Executive Director. The Shoring CLU Institute Scholarship was created in his honor in 1980. He was a life and honorary member of the American Society, CLU and ChFC. He had been a director of the Stoneham (Massachusetts) Savings Bank and the Finance and Advisory Board at Stoneham's Town Meetings. He was adjunct faculty at Boston University, teaching CLU courses. In Hartford he became a Trustee and Fund-Raising Advisor to the Greater Hartford Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center, Inc.; member, Board of Governors, Connecticut Children's Medical Center and Fund-Raising Advisor to the Center. He served as President, Connecticut T ufts Alliance; President, Old Guard of West Hartford, member Board of Governors, Country Club of Farmington, and was on the faculty of the UCONN School of Insurance for seven years. He also served as editorial consultant, LIMRA International of Farmington (now Windsor).

In retirement, he was a consultant to the National Executives Service Corps (NESC), Park Ave. NYC. In West Hartford, he was an advocate for Senior Housing on the SWHAT team. He was docent, historical interpreter and a public relations advisor to the Noah Webster Foundation. In recent years he was active in the Adult Learning at Central Conn. State University; the Adult Learning Program of the Hartford Consortium for Higher Learning, and GHIP, the Governor's program for bringing former welfare people into the insurance business. He was a founding member of the Charles Tufts Society, Tufts University and a life member Delta Upsilon fraternity.

At the Country Club of Farmington, he was elected to the Board of Governors. He also served as Secretary of the Rockledge Mens Club. He was a member of the West Hartford YMCA board, on the Advisory Board of the Adult Learner's Program, West Hartford Senior Center. In 2001, he was appointed to the Fair Rent Commission in West Hartford.

In 2012, he moved into Brookdale/Chatfield Senior Living in West Hartford, Connecticut. Frank is survived by his son, Robert Shoring of San Francisco, California, his daughter, Janet Walbridge of Falmouth, Massachusetts, most cherished granddaughter, Elizabeth Walbridge of Boston, Massachusetts and caring friend David Hall of West Hartford. He also leaves his extended family, the Baileys of eastern Connecticut, especially Shannon and Kennedy who call him Great Grampa, and Steve and Nancy, who were by his side as he approached the 19th hole.

Frank's ebullient presence filled every room he entered and a thousand people who have crossed paths with this gracious and witty man smile as they remember their own "Frank" story.
